MA in Global Studies
Q1: Does the programme accept a candidate without Project 985 or Project 211 educational background?
A1: Yes. It would be more favourable for a candidate if he or she has a related major background and a high score on the English language proficiency test (IELTS or TOEFL).
Q2: What's the number of admissions per year?
A2: Each master's program admits about 30-40 students per year.

Q4: I'm not a global studies major. Is there a chance for me to be accepted?
A4: Yes.
Q5: What kind of students are better suited for this programme?
A5: Our enrolled students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, with undergraduate majors in international relations, political science, diplomacy, world history, finance, business administration, or sustainable development in industry/agriculture. In addition, we also welcome students who are applying across majors. Students who can associate their professional knowledge or who are very interested in the interaction of politics, public policy and transnational economic activities will be able to adapt quickly to the programme.
Q6: Can I still submit applications if I don't have an up-to-standard GPA or language proficiency score or complete application materials?
A6: Bachelor's degree is required. It's suggested that a candidate fully prepare his or her application materials before submitting applications or he or she may not pass the preliminary review. However, a candidate is allowed to submit his or her reference letters within 14 days after the application deadline.
Q7: If I receive a conditional offer, when is the deadline for submitting supplementary materials?
A7: Students who are granted conditional admission are required to fulfill the conditions by the time requested in the acceptance letter. The deadline in specific for submitting the complete materials is subject to notification by the Graduate School.
Q8: What if I haven't got my graduation certificate or degree certificate?
A8: You can submit proof of full-time student status first.
Q9: What if my transcripts don't show my GPA or average points?
A9: You need to submit materials that prove your GPA or average points.
Q10: Is it acceptable to submit an electronic or scan version of the documents?
A10: Yes. There must be official seals on documents such as transcripts, graduation certificates, degree certificates and full-time student status proof.
Q11: How to submit reference letters?
A11: Fill in the referrer information in the online application system, and the referrer will receive an invitation email.
Q12: Who should I ask for a reference letter?
A12: A reference letter from your undergraduate professor is preferred. If you are already at work, you may seek a reference letter from your employer.
Q13: Is it a rolling admission or round admission?
A13: Round admission.
Q14: When will I know the result after I submit my application?
A14: After successfully submitting the online application, you can check the application result in the online application system. Please pay attention to the official website or email notification for the admission result.
Q15: When will the entrance exam be held?
A15: The first round of applications: December-January of the following year. The second round of applications: April of the follow year-May of the same year.
Q16: What are the main contents and forms of the entrance examination for the MA in Global Studies programme?
A16: The interview is usually organized online in full English. It is mainly to examine whether the applicant has fluent and proficient communication skills in English and the level of thinking and experience in humanities and social science research.
Q17: Why can't I take the entrance exam even though my undergraduate GPA and language score meet the standard?
A17: Applicants with excellent qualifications in all areas will be given priority for entrance examinations. We recommend that applicants prepare their application materials and language proficiency test carefully to increase their competitiveness.
Q18: Do I need to pay tuition in advance after being accepted?
A18: You need to decide whether to accept or reject the offer and respond to the admission letter within two weeks. If you accept the offer, you will need to make the first payment of tuition by the stated deadline.
Q19: How about career development after graduation?
A19: There are mainly two directions. The first one is to further study for a doctorate in a related field in world-known universities in Europe, the USA, Singapore and other regions or countries. Meanwhile, HSS also has a Global Studies PhD programme. Enrolled students can consult directly with professors of their major concentration to see if there are opportunities. The second one is to work in government agencies, think tanks, international organizations, multinational corporations, NGOs, and other fields and industries.
Q20: Does the university provide accommodation?
A20: Subject to notice from the graduate school.
Q21: How much does it cost to rent a room around the campus?
A21: About RMB 2,000-4,000 per month.
Q22: Can I apply for the summer camp?
A22: Our summer camp is open to full-time enrolled undergraduate students in junior year. The application system is open from April to June every year. Selected candidates would receive a camp admission letter in July or early August. The specific application requirements and process may change from year to year, so please pay attention to the latest news released by the official website.
