MPhil-PhD in Sustainable Development

The M.Phil. - Ph.D. Programme in Sustainable Development is a cutting-edge academic training programme addressing global sustainable development challenges. It is dedicated to cultivating high-level research talent with interdisciplinary thinking and practical innovation, preparing them for academic institutions, government departments, and international organizations as professional researchers and policymakers. This programme is open to students with backgrounds in sustainable development, economics, political science, sociology, public policy, environmental science, geography, and other related disciplines. Through a blend of theoretical instruction, scientific analysis, and practical training, students will systematically grasp core sustainable development issues, including urbanization, climate change, resource management, and governance. Taught by an international faculty, the programme emphasizes critical thinking and strategic decision-making skills. Integrating case studies, academic seminars, and field research, the programme aims to enhance students' comprehensive capabilities in academic research, policymaking, and industry practice.

 

 

For the PhD programme, the applicant shall have:

- A Master's degree holder from a recognized university; or Graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or Graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or Completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

- Fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements:

1. TOEFL: at least 550 (Paper-based)/ 79 (Internet-based/Home Edition); or

2. IELTS (Academic): at least 6.5 (Test Centre-based/ Online); or

3. GMAT: at least 21 (Verbal); or

4. GMAT Focus Edition: at least 78 (Verbal); or

5. Graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Hong Kong or in English Speaking Country.

 

Note:

1）This is based on the understanding that English is the medium of instruction of degree programmes offered by universities in Hong Kong. The CUHK(SZ) Graduate School may request applicants to provide additional supporting documents to prove their English proficiency.

2）TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years from the test date. GMAT scores are considered valid for five years from the test date. GMAT (Verbal) scores at or above the threshold value of 21 will be kept until the score validity phases out.
