MPhil-PhD in Applied Psychology

The programme is designed for students who wish to pursue a higher degree in the broad area of applied psychology within a framework of human lifespan development (human cognitive development and human career development) and with a research focus on cognitive development, decision-making, and mental health in the information age. The programme aims to strengthen students’ knowledge in applied psychology and train them to carry out original research independently, critically, and innovatively.

Q1: Is the selection of supervisors based on ranking applicants and then assigning them?

A1: The selection of supervisors is a dynamic and two-way process.

 

Q2: Can I upload a screenshot of my transcript? Can I submit a degree certificate verified by the China Higher Education Student Information and Career Center (CHESICC)?

A2: No, you must submit official transcripts. For applicants who have graduated, you need to submit the original copy of your graduation and degree certificates. For current students, you need to submit an official proof of enrollment.

 

Q3: If I have studied abroad, can I be exempt from language test scores?

A3: You need to submit complete transcripts for your undergraduate and master's degrees, an English-taught program certificate (if required), and your degree certificate. After verification, if you meet the relevant requirements, you may be exempt from language test scores.

 

Q4: Can other language test scores replace IELTS/TOEFL/GMAT?

A4: No, they cannot.

 

Q5: Are there any specific requirements or word limits for the personal statement?

A5: The personal statement should be around 1000 words, and you can write it on your own.

 

Q6: Do you only accept academic recommendation letters? Can I submit professional recommendation letters?

A6: We respect the applicant's choice of recommenders.

 

Q7: How can I apply for scholarships?

A7: Applicants will automatically be considered as candidates for admission scholarships.

 

Q8: Can I apply for part-time study?

A8: The program is full-time.

 

Q9: When will the review process start?

A9: The first round of review will begin after the application deadline.

 

Q10: How long does it take to receive follow-up notifications after submitting the application? If I participate in an interview, how long will it take to know the final admission result?

A10: There is no exact timeline as the doctoral application and admission process can be lengthy. Please be patient and rely on email notifications for updates.

 

Q11: Will I receive a notification if I am not admitted?

A11: Ultimately, rejection letters will be sent, and you can also check the application results on the online application system.

 

Q12: What degree certificate will be awarded? Is it recognized in China?

A12: Qualified graduates will be awarded a degree certificate from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, which can be recognized by the China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center.

 

Q13: Are MPhil and PhD separate programs?

A13: MPhil is not offered as a separate program. The Doctoral Program in Applied Psychology only admits Master's students.

 

Q14: Can students in their third year of study apply?

A14: Yes, they can apply. If accepted, they must meet all admission requirements before enrollment.

 

Q15: Is it necessary to have published papers to apply? Are conference papers considered publications?

A15: Having research achievements or published papers will be given priority consideration. Conference papers are also considered publications.

 

Q16: Are there any specific requirements or word limits for the research proposal?

A16: There are no specific requirements. Please write the research proposal yourself and upload it as a supplementary document in the online application system.

 

Q17: Is it necessary to contact a supervisor in advance?

A17: It is recommended to directly submit the online application.

 

Q18: Will the interview be conducted by a committee or should I contact potential supervisors?

A18: Admission and scholarships will be determined by the Doctoral Admission Committee's comprehensive evaluation.
